Pulau Perhentian Kecil Paradise waters
Turtles in the wild in clear waters, what a site and what an amazing experience. Hire a local guy with a boat for an afternoon of adventure. The locals are very familiar with the region and will let you get acquainted with amazing sea species. The guide should be able to determine where a turtle swims by looking into the waters. Also, when snorkeling together, the guide can show you the clownfish hidden in the anemones. Absolutely amazing!
Turtles and clownfish are not an uncommon sight. As mentioned, your captain should be able to spot the turtles and if you are lucky, you may be able to swim with them in the wild! But remember to keep your distance to avoid making them stressed as you are a guest in their home.

The Perhentian Islands
The Perhentian Islands. These islands are getting more and more known as the tropical ‘go to’ islands in Malaysia where before Lankawi and Penang were more popular. At long beach you can find the most smooth beachfront you can imagine with perfect snorkel sights just around the corner. At night, sit around small campfire’s on the beach and meet fellow travelers. During the day, relax at the beach front, take a dip every now and then and dream away at true paradise. As a note, “doctor fish” have been spotted in the area. Those little black fish that clean your skin from death skin cells. They are known to swim around in small groups, and if they spot you, you will get a free spa-treatment!

How to get there
To get there, fly to Kota Bharu (North Malaysia) and take a taxi to Kuala Besut (takes about 1 hour), where the boats to the Perhentian islands depart. If you are late, book a room at Kuala Besut as the boats not depart after certain times anymore. As there are limited amounts of rooms available in the village, try to avoid being stranded when you miss the last boat!
- Book your hotel (way) in advance as the rooms on both Perhentian islands are sold out quick.
- No boat will take you to the island if you haven’t made a hotel reservation yet. It is thus not possible to find a room on the island upon arrival.
- Take sufficient cash or a credit card with you as there are no ATM’s at Long Beach, you will have to go by boat to a nearby small village to get to an ATM. Better be prepared.
- Kota Bharu is a traditional Muslim village, if you don’t want to feel ‘looked at’ dress appropriately.
